A word to the wise

What’s that coming over the hill, is it a monster? Is this double-dip thing likely or is it just hype?
Well the government (the current one that is) have done all they can to allay our fears including getting the head of the International Monetary Fund to tell our industry leaders that Labour are doing the right things and should keep on spending our money, if we have any left.
The vast majority of organisations are presented with an interesting dilemma with regard to technology projects. Do they retrench further, freezing capital budgets and wait to see what happens or take this opportunity to look for more innovative ways to reshape for the future and simply make it happen?
Technology projects are designed to deliver benefits to the customers and the employees of any organisation. It is often the wishes and demands of these end-users and not the aspirations of management that drive effective change and force organisations to consider the infrastructure, systems and tools that facilitate their operations.
I worked with a young computer programmer once who lived by the familiar motto ‘work smart, not hard’. No matter how complex the task or pressured the deadline he would always complete the work on time and to specification. His work ethic was simple; understand the tools at your disposal and utilise them to the best of your advantage and their ability. But, don’t limit yourself. Technology is simply the use of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems. If it’s not solving the problem then it’s the wrong technology.
As we are told that the successful organisations over the next 3-5 years will be those that demonstrate the highest degree of adaptability and flexibility, to do more with less, I would pose the following question to you:
Does your information and communication infrastructure allow you to do more with less?
If the answer is ‘no’ then it’s time to consider why and how you will address it.
