Reality of Unified Communications?

22 March 2010

Effective communication and collaboration is key to the success of any enterprise, with a vast array of technology solutions to support this. But how do you chose the right technology? And how do you determine what is most appropriate for your business?

I am attending a debate this week, hosted by IDC, Microsoft and HP, to discuss exactly that. And I’m actually looking forward to it. Most discussions to date have been focused on the technology side, and which vendor(s) are dominating the market. But what is of more interest is what are users actually using? What is the reality of unified communications for the SMB market? Many of our customers are taking a piecemeal approach to unified communications, rolling out elements of an overall solution where a clear ROI can be proven. The message for me is clear – unified communications is not a ‘one size fits all’ solution, but has to be adapted to suit business requirements. That may mean that in some instances it simply isn’t applicable. Whether others will agree with me remains to be seen. I’ll keep you updated.
