The future was nearly orange...

13 July 2010

Many Orange shirts got together Sunday night in a nearby village for a garden display of the world cup final.

Unfortunately we did not get the result we were hoping for, and at ten we sadly parted. Due to the extra time I then found myself heading home, challenging the British country roads on my ‘light-less’ pushbike, hoping my high-visibility orange shirt would provide me some protecting.

But wasn’t it a magnificent sight, all that orange? Once, orange was the Alcatel corporate colour, still prominent on the OmniSwitch 9000 series, and so much more exciting than the blue-grey colour too commonly found in equipment racks.

However since the merger with Lucent the orange has been replaced by purple, symbolizing ambition. And I have to admit that Alcatel-Lucent is showing some of that ambition with their new line of data centre switches, providing unprecedented 10G wirespeed switching for up to 256 ports at less than 22 watts per port. This is purple as well as green! Just a shame that the boxes only come in white ….
